Well I think it is.. A long period of debugging and coding brought hospitalization for stress, exhaustion and a random collapsed lung after for the programmer after it was all said and done. This was the first sprite-scaling race game. On release it was massively popular and a huge step forward in game design. Pole position didn’t come out for another year. The programmer for the Atari 2600 port was hit by a drunk driver while riding a bicycle. It seems anyone who touches this program has issues. But, through their efforts, the 3rd person perspective first debuted here is the legacy.
I lost many quarters to this game and even now if I find a functioning one, I can’t floor it in high gear without insta-crashing into someone else. I have to soft foot the pedal or I hit something. Istill want to know what the ambulance has under the hood for it to outrun a formula car.

I remember sinking a lot of time into this game at an arcade in a summer camp I used to go to. By the time I left the camp I knew that game inside and out . Sidenote: a collapsed lung HURTS, it was the most physically painful thing I have yet to experience 0/10 do not reccomend .

Mazes and Monsters, on the other hand, is a far-out game.

I was more of a Pole Position fan.

once it hit, me too. but only if the settings allowed 250mph+ otherwise it got zero replay from me. PP2 for the win, test track only.

I remember DROOLING over the screenshot of this in the catalog that came with the Colecovision we got for Christmas in 1984. Shame that was 5 minutes before Colecovision games disappeared from stores. To this day I don’t think I’ve ever played it, but I still often think of the screenshot with the “Cars Passed” g raph when I’m flying down the expressway.

I had the colecovision version and the wheel set. It was awesome except for the manufacturing defect making the car slowly drift right at all times making a drive involve constantly slow left turning just to go straight. Took 4 c batteries but i don't recall replacing them often.

I’m reading masters of doom at the moment. If you want a book about that era and the rise of shooters rather than racers that's it
